oops! I should also have mentioned:
I've got a 486/DX33, with a Future Domain SCSI interface, so a SCSI
CD-ROM is also a possibility.

Subject: [Q] Which CD-ROM drive to buy?
Hi all,
Any recommendations for a CD-ROM drive to buy?
It MUST be double speed.
It MUST be able to send audio through my GUS.
It would be nice to be able to plug it into my GUS directly (Are the CD-ROM
daughter boards available in the UK?)
Price as cheap as possible (I know, you get what you pay for).
Any ideas? Suggestions? Places to look?
Cheers,

Subject: Different GUS (hardware) revisions
Could someone tell me the different revisions of the GUS? like a revision
history or something?
Like start with v2.2 (the one I bought for $99 from EA Direct back in Oct 92)
all the way up to the latest (v3.7?!?) one.
I'm at college (away from any PC that can use the GUS meaningfully) so I
might sell it now and buy a newer hardware version if Gravis ever bothers to
add a decent hardware mixer.

I've had Links Pro running from day one using SBOS with no switches.
I can't say I've played a lot (maybe 5 hours or so), but I've never
had any crashes. Maybe it's a free memory problem? I'm running QEMM7
on DOS5 and have 636K free even with SBOS.

Subject: HELP !
Hi GUSsers,
I recently (tried to) install GUS0041. I understood that it is a bugfix
over GUS0038 or similar, so I installed it alone without the previous version.
I opened the zips and ran the install. When the install
ran SETGUS I just picked whatever was already running smoothly on my comp
220,6,6,7,7 (or 220,1,1,7,7 or 220,1,1,5,5) and many more - I tried to
save it and all it gave me was Parity Error -System halted and sometimes
it yelled something about "Disk (80)..something" - and it all happend while it checked my settings.
I used to have troubles with SETGUS only when it checked the SBOS parameters
and it always found my DMA read to be faulty, although I never had probs
with SBOS !
And ofcourse, as I believe was reported - Ultrainit doesn't reset the board
probably,
and Gusmod has to be ran before Windows or alike.
anybody with a solution ? Gravis ?
Thanks,
/Shmulik.

Subject: Help for a newbie
I got my GUS yesterday. It's absolutely incredible. I spent the whole
night playing MIDI files that came with the card and ones I collected
along the way. :) But I have few questions for GUS experts out there...
I used to own a MediaVision ThunderBoard. I would like to have them in
my system simultaneously, and use ThunderBoard for game compatibility.
What do I need to do to make them coexist peacefully?
My ThunderBoard settings:
Add 220
IRQ 5
DMA 1
My GUS Settings:
GUS Add 220
GUS DMA 1 (Playback)
GUS DMA 1 (Record)
GUS IRQ 11
SB/MIDI DMA 1
SB/MIDI IRQ 5
Another question:
What files do I need to download from FTP sites so I will have the
latest version of all programs? And what's the filename of the Miles
driver?
Here'are my programs' versions:
ultrinit 2.16
convert 1.01
playfile 3.2b
playmidi 5.03
ultramid 1.06a
sbos 3.7
emuset 2.03
megaem 2.03
And my GUS is revision 3.7 with 256K (1MB in the future).
Last question...
What games ultilize GUS' special features? I already got DOOM. Again,
it's incredible. I also have Epic Pinball, which came with GUS. GUS
whips my friend's SB16 Basic in music reproduction. SB16 Basic hisses
all the time; GUS' music is absolutely marvelous. BTW, he has a pair
of $140 Sony speakers and I have a pair of $20 Labtec speakers. :)
Email replies appreciated.
Final words: GUS RULES. :)

Subject: Problems with USS8
Hi Folks
I got a problem with Ultrasound Studio 8, and as tech@gravis.com
seems to be a bottomless pit I'll try you guys out with this one ....
Gravis Software: Install 2.06a upgraded via disks GUS0038a/b to
Install 3.1 further by application of GUS0040
SBOS 3.81
Ultrasound Studio 8 v1.01 (from Install 2.06a)
Software affected: Ultrasound Studio 8 v1.01
Symptoms: On pressing the "Sample" or "Record" buttons in USS8, the screen
fills with garbage and the machine hangs up within about 5
seconds, if I quit from USS8 before it hangs, the keyboard is
dead when I return to DOS.....
On playing a sample (pre-recorded .SNDs from Install 2.06a) the
play button/mouse cursor is replaced by an ugly "splat" on the
screen which is the prelude to a system crash......
Any Ideas willingly tried, I just wanna try all the bundled software out .
but I can't because USS8 craps out, but apart from this problem I've had
no others at all (yet :))
Regards
Jason

Subject: Xwing and Hell
Well, I hope that subject line got someone's attention. Two questions, could
someone please help me out?
1) The music for Xwing sounds great with Megaem, but some of the sound
effects sound terrible. I got two programs that were supposed to fix this,
one with a new ultrasnd.ini and some extra patches, and one with new .ims
files. Neither seemed to do anything. Is it possible to get it to sound like
it did with the SB? If not, could someone please explain why? Using DOTT
with Megaem sounded excellent, all the sound effects sounded the same.
2) I got the Hell demo off an FTP site, but as soon as I load it, it puts
strange characters on the screen and freezes. I tried several different
memory configs but nothing worked. Any ideas?
Thanks!
